‘Marathi’ ranks 19th in the list of most spoken languages in the world. It is an Indian language spoken predominantly by the Marathi people of Maharashtra state. Nearly 800 years ago, Saint Dnyaneshwar had compared the language of Marathi to be sweeter than the sweetest of elixirs. The great Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj once had nearly entire Indian subcontinent under his regime. Legendary freedom fighters like V.D. Savarkar loved and respected their mother – tongue like their own mother. Literary genius of the likes of P.L. Deshpande and Suresh Bhat considered themselves lucky to born in a Marathi speaking household and have enriched the literature history of Maharashtra.
Music exponents like Shriniwas Khale, Sudhir Phadke and Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar have graced the Marathi music with their heavenly compositions. Marathi culture has undoubtedly carved its own niche for itself because of its rich cultural heritage. But the question here is not about the past. It’s about the present and future. The question is what has the current generation done for preserving this great heritage for their future generations? This very thought has transcended into the creation of this new musical – “Marathi Astitva”. This scripted show has a meaningful narration which attempts at creating a cultural awareness among the Marathi speaking families in the USA.
